In 1963, William Golding, the author of the novel Lord of the Flies, said in an interview that although he was appalled by the evils of Nazism and the tierce Reich, he still believed that everyone was capable of inhumanity. He therefore looked for an explanation in the nature of human beings themselves in their capaci ty for brutality and inhumanity when the boundaries of civilization become undone. On the one hand, the novel draws heavily upon the literary motif of the liveliness organism a figment of the childrens imagination, conjured up as an embodiment of their potential for evil or savagery.
